What do I need in my baby’s nursery?

If you’re a momma-to-be or already have a newborn, you’re in the right place!

When I first became a nanny… I had no idea how many sleep promoting gadgets and tools there were out there. I had little knowledge on sleep environment and all of the things we can do to support healthy sleep habits for newborns.

As I worked with different families, I quickly noticed how certain tools can really transform the process of nap/bed time from a stressful experience to a gentle and enjoyable process.

Below I have compiled a list of things I believe are extremely helpful for making the transition from womb to world!

Nursery Essentials

Furniture / Gadgets

  • Crib - slats should be no more than 2 3/8” apart, no lead based paint, side rails can have plastic teething guard, no cut out areas on headboard or footboard

  • Changing table with drawers not shelves

  • Baby monitor (Nanit or Nest are great options)

  • Some form of armchair, glider, rocking chair with ottoman with recline is great

  • Small table next to chair

  • Nursery light with red bulb

  • Pacifiers/dummies - all babies have strong sucking reflexes

  • Bouncy seat for AWAKE time

  • Feeding pillow - Boppy love

  • White noise machine

  • Black out blinds

Clothing & Bedding

  • Swaddles

  • Clothing (25% of clothing age 0-3 months and 75% of clothing age 3-6 months)

  • Newborn gowns or onesies (I really prefer ones with zips, poppers can be difficult during those night changes!)

  • Socks

  • Crib sheets (fitted)

  • Crib sheet savers

  • Mesh bumper if desired

  • Mobile

  • Detergent (BabyGanics is a great option)

Feeding

  • Formula (always keep some in stock JUST IN CASE, it’s better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it!)

  • Bottles (Dr Browns slow flow nipples)

  • Bottle warmer (Baby Brezza Formula Pro Advanced Dispenser)

  • Bottle / nipple brush

  • Bottle steriliser bag

  • Bottle drying rack

  • Burp clothes +++

  • Bibs +++

Changing & Diapering

  • Changing table/area (upstairs & downstairs)

  • Changing pad

  • Changing pad cover

  • Waterproof lap pads

  • Diapers (100 NB, size N, up to 10lbs)

  • Diaper pail

  • Baby scissors / baby emery board

  • Nasal aspirator (nose Frida)

  • Saline drops

  • Gas water - colic calm

  • Thermometer

  • Bathtub

  • Infant towels and wash clothes

  • Liquid baby soap (Honest Co, BabyGanics)
